Lesson 8: Introduction to Properties in HubSpot

All of these pieces of data that you see in HubSpot against a contact or against a company or a deal, or a ticket are all properties. You can create new properties. There are a lot of default HubSpot properties.

Navigating to Properties

  • Go to Settings

  • Under Data Management, click Properties

Here, properties are grouped by objects (Contacts, Companies, Deals, Tickets, etc.). We'll focus on Contact properties for this lesson.

Understanding Properties

This is where all of our properties are listed out. Some are created by HubSpot; others by users. They have different types, names, and can be grouped to stay organized.

Creating a New Property

Why Create a New Property?

Let’s say we want to create a property that doesn’t exist by default — for example, Product Interest. This helps us understand what products a contact is interested in and can be useful for reporting and decision-making.

Setting It Up

  • Object type: Contact

  • Group: Contact Information

  • Label: Product Interest

  • Description: Used to identify product interest for marketing/sales

Click Next to continue.

Choosing the Field Type

Field Type Options:

  • Single line text

  • Multi-line text

  • Single checkbox (yes/no)

  • Multiple checkboxes

  • Dropdown select

  • Radio select

  • Date picker

  • Number

  • Calculation

  • Score

  • File

  • HubSpot user

  • Rich text

For this example, choose Multiple Checkboxes, as a contact might be interested in more than one product.

Adding Checkbox Options

  • Add your product options

  • You’ll see a preview and internal values

  • Sort options alphabetically or manually

  • Remove any unnecessary options

Click Next once you're done.

Display Rules and Final Setup

Visibility Options

You’ll be asked if the property should be shown on:

  • Forms

  • Pop-up forms

  • Bots

Leave it selected if you want it on public-facing forms. Otherwise, turn it off for internal use only.

Click Create.

Using the New Property

Finding and Editing

You can search for your new property (e.g. "Product Interest") and make updates anytime.

Viewing Usage

You’ll be able to see where it’s used — in workflows, lists, forms, etc.

Adding the Property to a Contact Record

Customize Left Sidebar

  • Go to Data Management > Objects > Contacts

  • Edit Default View

  • Add the Product Interest property under “About this Contact”

Now all users will see this on the left-hand side of the contact record.

Adding the Property to a Form

Creating a Form

  • Go to Marketing > Lead Capture > Forms

  • Choose Embedded Form

  • Start with a Blank Template

Add the Product Interest property to the form and embed it on a page.
